Overspeed Governor

The Acorn lift is fitted with an overspeed governor (OSG) and gear safety device that will lock the lift to the rail in the event of a mechanical failure or excessive speed.

Acorn lifts have an internal overspeed governor (OSG) as standard equipment. ACORN believes that it is irresponsible to supply a stair lift resident a stairlift without this vital safety equipment. This feature immediately stops the unit in the unlikely event of an overspeed uncontrolled descent.

Stairlift OSG over speed governor (BS5776) Safety Standard. The BS5776 standard for safety features on stairlifts is principally concerned with stairlifts installed in residential premises. This device monitors the speed of a stairlift! Average travel speed for domestic straight stairlifts range between 30 feet per minute 0.34 miles per hour. Should the OSG mechanism sense any over-speed, the centrifugal force causes the over speed governor cams to fly out and in turn release the safety gear jaw which rapidly clamps to the stairlift rail and disengages the motor drive power bringing the stairlift to an immediate safe stop.

Acorn Stairlifts is officially the first stairlift
company to earn the prestigious
Ease-of-Use Commendation from the
Arthritis Foundation.
